I wasn’t a fan of season 1 simply because I was busy watching other shows but by accident I ended up watching 50 seconds with Natalie Jackson Mendoza and I was hooked.It was interesting to see a likeness to shows such as Las Vagas which I was a fan of for a brief period.The characters are all interesting in their own ways and the writing is brilliant with the employees of Hotel Babylon dealing with the celebrities and the problems they bring.The most interesting character so far seems Tony a man who should not be reckoned with.I give this show a full ten simply because its smart, funny and fuckable.

Watchmen

I really don’t understand how people could really enjoy this show. It almost seems like this rating is being padded.First the good: The effects are cool - but nothing really new. The only character that is enjoyable is Rorschach. (His one line in prison was great! - “You guys don’t understand. I am not stuck in here with you, you guys are stuck in here with me.”) But one line doesn’t redeem a movie.The bad: The story line is confusing and moves all over the place - almost like the editor picked up the pieces off the floor in a semi-random fashion. Flashbacks without any reason. The plot is thin. We never really care about any of the characters. The gore is just for shock value. The guy with the “blue prick” is boring - his character is flat and sterile. There are sex scenes that last way too long - almost a soft porn movie.Basically - the rating of this is currently 8.1 - Lord of the Rings got a 8.7. If you really think this boring and crappy movie is in the same league as that stunning movie - then please go see it. Then also take time to view Plan 9 from Outer Space. You will enjoy that too.

Baghead

In “Baghead,” Matt, Chad, Katherine and Michelle are four Hollywood wannabes who go to a secluded cabin to write a screenplay. They get pretty much no work done, but spend plenty of time over petty practical jokes and obsessions with who likes who and who’s screwing who. Things get weird when a strange figure wearing a bag over his head begins appearing in the woods, freaking all of them out to a progressively greater degree.”Baghead” is one of those reflexive films about the process of making films. It blurs the line between reality and fiction, and whether intentional or not, it questions whether or not the democratization of film-making is good for the art form. Any four yahoos with a portable camera can now make a movie, but just because a movie is cheap and made outside of the Hollywood system does not make it automatically better. At the film’s beginning, the four attend a screening of an underground film made for under $1,000 by a director they obviously worship, and I was never sure whether “Baghead” itself was an attempt at creating the kind of low-budget quality film the characters in it admire or whether it was poking fun at the whole idea. Maybe it’s both.Whatever its intentions, I liked the film, and especially liked where it went in its final moments, when these four rather boring people we’ve spent over an hour with become actual characters who we discover we actually care about.

I hate when a storyline is going nicely and we’re about to get to the ending, but then there’s one more episode until the finale and then everyone just starts TALKING, TALKING, TALKING to waste time. AND there’s an episode break because of Labor Day.

The Girlfriend Experience

Steven Soderbergh took his biggest departure in 2005 when he made Bubble. He filmed it using nonprofessional actors and using real locations to make this small town thriller all the more realistic. Like Robert Bresson before him, he creates a familiar world with normal people thrown into extraordinary situations.His latest work, The Girlfriend Experience, is unlike any other film he has done to date, the closest in comparison being Bubble. This film stars Sasha Grey, a real life porn star who plays Chelsea, an upscale prostitute trying to find a balance between happiness and a career. Her boyfriend Chris is a fitness trainer and the two seemingly exist knowing very well the extent of each other’s occupation. What any other filmmaker would do is focus on how the man deals with having the woman he loves working as a hooker, like Billy Wilder’s Irma La Douce. What Soderbergh does is look past this and focus on their individual goals and how they can coexist.Most of the movie shows the two characters separate from each other. We are given clues that they are with one another through pictures of the couple and the occasional conversation, but for the most part we watch them separately. They are both trying to earn more money. Times are hard for Chris because of the economy’s decline, but Chelsea will always have work to do. It’s picking the right direction for her career that is the problem.We jump around to different parts of the story and pick up pieces of conversations along the way. Some of them seem to be irrelevant, but in the end it all adds up. It’s wonderfully constructed in an unconventional and nonlinear format.What I loved so much about this film is how I felt like I wasn’t watching a movie but was watching real life people. The conversations were casual and nothing was too over the top, especially considering much of the dialogue comes from clients of Chelsea or in regards to her work. It’s not quite voyeurism but it’s something along those lines.I’ve read some criticism about the performance from Grey and how she comes off flat and doesn’t belong here, but I completely disagree. I don’t think she should be here because she is a porn star, but because of the way she composes herself. She isn’t flamboyant, over dramatic, or immature, but is sometimes stoic, but more often than not seems to just be herself, which is ironic considering her character has a lot of conversations about not being herself with clients.This film is not for everyone. For those seeking something out of the ordinary should look no further than here. Don’t expect to see a lot of raw sex. Her role as a prostitute is merely a way to convey the messages about human desires and necessities. A awesome look into a life that is rarely if ever seen.
